Things To Be Thankful For

A recent post told of a family’s tale of sleep hardship, one that made me feel grateful of how things could be worse.  Hopefully someone else will be as relieved as I was.

The two boys and a girl, now 14 months old, were born three months early. Each weighed about 1.5 pounds when born and spent some time in the hospital before coming home.

Not twins, triplets! All preemie. Ouch, and they were in ICU for a few days before they came home.  That’s tough.  On top of this none of them slept well.

Fortunately, there is a happy ending when they discovered the “Fussy Baby program” run by Southwest Human Development of Phoenix, who helped them achieve what many new parents can only dream of.

They shunned the cry-it-out method for other techniques, including:

Putting a fan in the room to create a constant background sound. This is my favorite, I have mentioned in other articles. White noise works wonders to recreate the womb sounds and can soothe infants.

They got their kids to use pacifiers. I’m not a huge fan of pacifiers as it may create troubles down the road with dependance on the object.  It can be annoying for some parents.  We used one, but fortunately our baby decided on her own that she was done with it at about 6 months.

They also established a daily routine for the children. This is huge and can mean the difference between getting sleep and not.  It’s the method touted in the Baby Sleep Solution program and I would recommend it highly for anyone trying to get some sleep.

It’s good to see more programs being developed to deal with something many parents struggle with.  Check your local hospitals and pediatricians office for any recommended programs like the one in Arizona.

If you can get help with your baby’s sleep troubles, use any resource you can!
